| ALPINE — Sacred Sky, Sacred Earth offered a mystic experience that fed the senses and made one feel a true part of this world. With the efforts of Peter Terezakis and Lux Boreal, a group of artistic performance dancers who moved in eurhythmic motion to the floating tones set by Steven Garcia and directed by Allyson Green, the director of dance at UCSD, the evening was pure magic. |

Peter Terezakis' "Rubaiyat" was more ambitious. The intention of this grid of patinated electrical boxes and conduits was to vary the multi-layered sound it generated in response to viewer movement. The tonal changes produced by any particular motion were hard to discern, but the fact that one wanted to experience such interaction suggests the potential power in the theoretical bases of this work. This was also true for many of the other works in this collection. -- SIGGRAPH's Fourth Annual

San Diego Museum of Art : Heart Beats Light," a cybernetic light sculpture created by visual artist Peter Terezakis, accompanied by an evocative site-specific dance created by Green for eight dancers, and a sound score by British composer Alan Stones.
"Heart Beats Light" has its genesis in Jean Dupuy's seminal 1968 Art and Technology sculpture, Heart Beats Dust.

| "In recent dances I have been honing "the discipline of fragments," a choreographic method arising from a preoccupation with finding continuity out of discrete and disparate materials. 2 Trees from Brazil (2000) incorporates the non-linear and disjunctive geography of the electronic 'space' we so frequently inhabit. In the solo prelude (2001), Terry Rosenberg's spontaneous drawing, Peter Terezakis's video projection and my practice of kinetic mapping converge." -- Wendy Rogers, Foundation for Contemporary Arts |

In at least one recent piece by Green and in her new duet Abandon, artist Peter Terezakis's light installations play a vital role. Tom Ontveros's video projections and original lighting designs (recreated at these performances by Carol Mullins) grace the also new Full Circle...
The landscape that backs Green's Abandon is a video involving Terezakis's installations in the Sonoran Desert. Shot from diverse angles at dusk and nightime hours, the slender light columns dotting the terrain illuminate or go dark on individual schedules. Green spends a lot of time watching the scenes projected on a huge sheet of suspended fabric, as if she's dreaming them. Monica Bill Barnes—a marvel of rapid, fluently tumbling changes—enters Green's dreamy space like a small whirlwind, as if trying to awaken Green and pull her into another world of motion. Green copies some of Barnes's calmer moves, and the two dance facing one another, but, left alone, Green has her own concerns. What her arms shape, what her eyes see on the floor are mysteries, but performed with lovely clarity they stir our imagination. |

Bright, shiny objects: A generation raised on television, computers and video games, it takes a lot to grab our attention. It takes something flashy and new, like the Allyson Green Dance performance at the James S. Copley Auditorium in the San Diego Museum of Art, 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct 7, through Sunday, Oct. 9. In addition to dance performances, the audience will experience video projections of light installations and a cybernetic light sculpture created by visual artist Peter Terezakis. |

| The Village Voice described Green as an arresting performer who projects “serenity, gentleness and thoughtfulness,” and called dancer Monica Bill Barnes, ’95, “a marvel of rapid, fluently tumbling changes—entering Green’s dreamy space like a small whirlwind.” Their performances, set against a desert landscape conjured from a video of Peter Terezakis’s light installation, were presented by Danspace Project in the Village in June. And in August, Green took her troupe’s vibrant desert dances to the cooler climes of St. Petersberg, Russia, and Riga, Latvia, on an ArtsLink Project Fellowship |

Latvian dancers will perform American - choreographed „Heart Beats Light” show in Jurmala and Cesis
Riga, August 29, 2006. – Next week American choreographer Allyson Green, her husband visual artist Peter Terezakis and British composer Alan Stones will stage a “Heart Beats Lights” show in Jurmala and Cesis. It will be performed by 10 Latvian Academy of Culture’s Modern Dance Choreography program 4th year students. The project is supported by the United States embassy in Latvia.
This is an ongoing exchange project to create site-specific dance performances with unique light installations; it also includes intensive workshop in contemporary dance technique as well as the creation of the new original dance performance where art, technology and dance merge. The performance is shown at full moon time which has a symbolic meaning – life and death, the full circle which ends and starts (lights switching on and off).
For the performances in Latvia, the composer Alan Stones will incorporate sounds and music from Romania and Greece as well as real 100 years old grandmother’s voice recordings will be expressed into the dance – telling to the child the meaning of the life. Also Latvian students are asked to come with their inputs and bring stories from their grandparents whose stories will be shown in dance and some words into music.
Allyson Green is in Latvia on behalf of the invitation by choreographer and the leader of Latvian Academy of Culture’s Modern Dance Choreography program Olga Zitluhina. During her stay in Latvia, the U.S. choreographer teaches classes in Riga in contemporary dance technique and improvisation for local students, also leads a workshop in pedagogy and contemporary critical theory for teachers at the Modern Dance Department at Latvian Academy of Culture. One of the main aims of the project is to maintain collaboration and exchange through artistic and educational projects involving artists from United States and Latvia.
Previous “Heart Beats Light” projects have taken place in such locations as the ocean cliff sides of Thesassia, Greece, along the Danube River of Bratislava, Slovakia, in castle ruins in Bucharest, Romania, on the shores of the Black Sea in Constanta, Romania and with dancers from Estonia, Croatia, Romania and America at the Torrey Pines beach of California.
The “Heart Beats Light” performances will take place on:
* 7th of September, Jurmala Dzintari beach at 20:30;
* 9th of September, Cesis Castle Park at 20:30.
Admission to the shows is free of charge.

"flower is a modular media/performance work that was developed in New York and San Diego in collaboration with Allyson Green Dance and Kim Whittam & Company, with visual artist Peter Terezakis and original sound by new music collective soNu.
The starting point for this performance work was a video. Two distinct dance performances in New York and San Diego were developed as embodied dimensions of the video.
An abstract poetic remix of the story of Antonie Saint-Exupery's Little Prince and his flower, this work meditates on time, history, and the delicate liminal spaces between the visible and invisible." --Heather Raikes

Have you ever thought of a grid of rusted conduit and junction boxes as a work of art? Imagine, if you will, a clean white wall covered by a grid of rusted conduit and junction boxes containing a dull blue lense and a small bright red light. At first glance it does not appear at all impressive and definitely not a work of art. Then some one walks past the grid, the bright red lights change to amber and classical music begins to play. Upon further investigation, you find out the blue lense are photo cells and the red lights are infrared laser beams.
The shadow of the person walking by disrupted the laser and caused the music to be played. During a visit to the Contemporary Arts Center of Virginia on October 30, 1997 I saw this exciting work of art titled "Zoe" which was created by Peter Terezakis. Having no memory of ever before visiting an art museum, I really did not expect the type of art on display. I had never thought of contemporary art in the forms I saw. Initially I thought this can't be the right place I felt more like I was visiting a science fair than an art exhibit. Even with the title of "Forces" I expected paintings representing motion or other forces of nature.
Never in my wildest dreams did I anticipate moving, breathing or seeing works of art. Being a person that has always liked things mechanical, and marveled at the amount of technology and perseverance it takes to create such things, this is a perfect fit for my understanding and appreciation of art. I was impressed by "Zoe" because it appears so simple, yet is really a complex work.
Creation of this piece required not only a lot of time, but it required an extreme amount of patience by the artist. Getting the correct sensitivity infrared lasers and focuses them correctly is an exacting effort in itself. This entire exhibit was filled with works that really show the connection between improving technologies and the world of art.
The "Cube" is an example of how the constant improvements in microcomputer technology can be used to turn a plain black box into a contemporary work of art. The timing circuitry used in "Orrey" to control the circulation of the trains is what really makes it an outstanding piece of artwork. These works seem to indicate that the artists had a strong technological background and were seeking a way to demonstrate some new and different uses of their favorite technology. The creation of these exhibits show how creative thinking and finding the right technology to support the idea can create whatever one may desire. The use of the correct tools and technology will allow any person to create their own work of art, no matter what type of artistic background they have. I have already seen the three-dimensional hologram technology adapted for use by the automotive custom paint industry. Having seen this use of the technology I feel these artists are truly contributing to the growth of contemporary art and technology. (Jimmy S) |

'INTERIM'
A choreographic collaboration with Ben Wright and US choreographer Allyson Green.
Allyson and myself have known each other for some 8 years now and this duet marks the first time that we have actually ever danced together professionally. The project was begun in July 2002 at Greenwich Dance Agency where we completed four weeks of working time. At the end of this period we had a clear sense of the pieces direction but needed a considerable amount of time to complete the process. As we had a premiere date already booked in New York for January 2003 it was imperative that a second and third period was needed to finish the work. Due to the geographical distance between us it was clear that these following periods of working time would have to be conducted in the US.
Thanks to funds from the Lisa Ullmann Travelling Scholarship I was able to fly to San Diego in November 2002, where Allyson is based, and spend a further three weeks working intensively on the duet. During-my five-week stint in California I was also able to create a new short work for the Beverly Hills High School Dance Company, which was also premiered in January 2003.
The November rehearsal period was a pivotal amount of time where we were able to question and fine-tune the growing nature of the work. The duet format can give rise to a whole host of emotional connotations and it became clear that our choreographic invention was summoning up a fragmented story. This fractured narrative grew organically form our movement investigation and while in San Diego we called on the assistance of a local theatre director, Margaret Williams, to help guide this through line.
Allyson had in her possession a book of poetry by Bernice Kenyon a contemporary of Dorothy Parker. This old volume was in fact given to her grandmother as a gift by the authoress herself. The final set of sonnets, entitled 'Interim' was to be the main influence on the overall affecting colour of the work. We decided to set the piece visually in the 1930's to tally with the historical period of the poetry and this choice greatly influenced our lighting designer Sarah Gilmartin and costume designer Leslie Malitz.
We held a viewing of the work in progress at our rehearsal venue, San Diego State University, at the end of November. This was a valuable opportunity to gain feedback from various local dance artists. Their comments helped carve the final version of the duet.
Whilst in America we were also able to meet regularly with the fine artist Peter Terezakis who was creating a visual and sculptural response to the duet. His contribution to the final evenings performance added a gallery type experience where audience members were able to wander around an installation of objects and video works. These were built to illuminate the themes held at the heart of the duet and offer viewers a collection of alternative objects to experience in a more intimate way, hence balancing their group experience of watching the duet en mass.
I returned to the UK at the start of December 2002 to complete other work commitments and returned to the US on 27th December to enter the last stage of rehearsal prior to our premiere at Danspace Project at St Marks Church on January 16th 2003.
I would like to thank The Lisa Ullmann Travelling Scholarship for their generous support in enabling me to complete the second period of rehearsal for this project. Collaborating with Allyson has offered me invaluable insight in to the intimate act of making a dance with one other person. Having won the Jerwood Choreographic award in November 2003 to make another duet with fellow UK dance artist Rachel Krische, I am certain that the experiences of working on 'Interim' will have a dramatic impact on future processes. We have a performance of 'Interim' in June 2003 at Greenwich Dance Agency and subsequent dates in the US during the autumn of 2003. I hope that the trustees will be able to attend the London performance.

Computer si arta. Peter Terezakis la Bucure?ti ?i Constan?a

"... Peter Terezakis' light installation powerfully suggests
heat lightning fragmenting the desert's night air..."
-- The New York Times, 2000
For the last 12 years, artist Peter Terezakis has been examining the sacredness of nature and open spaces, and questioning the effect development has had on rural areas. Since 1995, he has created temporary kinetic light installations in outdoor site-specific settings in deserts, forests and national parks throughout the world. Terezakis marries art and technology in a visual quest for spiritual engagement. Ordinary florescent lamps are transformed into short brushstrokes of light painting earth and sky. The installations change our perception of space as evanescent fiery discharges invoke a sense of physical movement across an expanding landscape of time and imagination. For Terezakis, this work is a visual metaphor for life's moments, bracketed between birth and death, witnessed beneath the vault of heaven.
Peter Terezakis has originated inter-active works of art varying in scale from simple jewelry-sized objects, to an interactive building designed in conjunction with Donald Trump's architect, Der Scutt. His works have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, including Canada, Greece, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Portugal, and Romania. As adjunct faculty at New York City's School of Visual Arts from 1993 to 2000, Terezakis co-created the Extended Forms major within the MFA Computer Art program.

In Paragraphs on Wind, Karl Anderson, David Figueroa, Sean Mueller, and Green join the women. The dance is full of beauty, and the crowd adores it. There's good music by Yarden and a stunning light installation by Peter Terezakis that climaxes the dance: Vertical fluorescent tubes, like ancestor spirits, flash in erratic rhythms from the church balcony.

On Campus: Nontraditional Art
Exploring art and science
LIGHT, TIME, PLANETART MOTION and technology. These are the bronzes, brushes and canvasses of a campus-wide exhibition and semester-long colloquy that will explore the intersection of art and science on campus this fall.
Students and faculty in the College of Engineering and the departments of physics, chemistry, biology, dance and art will interact with a dozen artists participating in the exhibition.
Forces: Art for the End of the Century is curated by Richard Humphrey '74, president of Creative Affairs for Master Vision International, Ltd.
"From advanced laser and animation technology to the exploration of natural light through prisms and bubbles, the exhibition comes alive with the use of these media and the challenge of discovery they foster," says Humphrey. "The artists in this exhibition use these materials in an attempt to forge a more profound relationship with the fact that we are in a world of rapid and frightening change."
First exhibited in his New York art gallery in 1994, Humphrey conceived Forces, which has since toured to several major American museums.
Forces will unfold around campus throughout the fall, starting with James Ossi's "Russian Constructivism via Venice" installed in the Weis Center in August. Other works will be set up around campus as well as in and around Center Gallery. Forces will include panel discussions and classroom presentations where artists, faculty and students will discuss the relationship between art and science and how it will evolve in the new millennium.
Performance events surrounding Forces include:
# Ron Kuivila's "Locus of Focus," a sound installation critiquing cyberspace and virtual reality, opening Oct. 16.
# Internationally renowned performance artist Laurie Anderson will appear at the Weis Center Nov. 1 with a collection of stories and songs about the future of art and technology.
# The dance department will choreograph an interactive work using fiber optics and software with artist Peter Terezakis Dec. 5 and 6.

"DANCE BUSY ---- MiraCosta College dance instructors are getting some good workouts these days. Chellana Dinsmore will begin the NBA basketball season as a choreographer for the Los Angeles Clippers Spirit Dance Team. Sadie Weinberg is in a number of off-campus dance activities, including "Under the Veil" on Nov. 18, at the Japan-American Theater in Los Angeles. Betzi Roe collaborated with artist Peter Terezakis to incorporate movement within one of his 150-foot-long light sculptures on the Coronado beach, and a number of MiraCosta dance students joined that cast. Betzi also created a new ballet with 14 dancers for the California Ballet Company concert in September at the Garfield Theater." |
